  • THE VIRGINIA TECH FRACAS

The European press, taking the high moral ground (the only high ground they know about taking) is blaming the Virginia Tech shootings on lack of gun control. The lone expression of sanity in it all is from the German daily Bild, where the editor writes, "But we have little reason to point an accusing finger at the Americans. Despite strict gun legislation, we (in Germany) have experienced the school shootings in Erfurt and Emsdetten. We have to consider the problems in our society."

Yeah. Like the fact that most of Europe's utter abandonment of the Christian culture that made it is bringing upon them a far, far worse problem than the period outbreaks of violence in American locales. They point their finger at us with moral indignation while allowing their culture to be taken over by the sort of religion that flies crowded airplanes into skyscrapers. Oh sorry, Europe, we'll try to do better next time.

I doubt that Europe is any less violent than the U.S. We generally only know what the media reports (and if I could properly express the contempt I feel for the media, my language would prompt my elders to pay me a visit). But if it is, it's only because there's still a war going on here in American, whereas Europe has already surrendered. Should we who are fighting a war listen to lectures by those who have lost?

  • Yes...gun control came up in the staff meeting this morning as well...*rolling eyes*  As I tried to point out: "It's not the weapon, it's the intent."

It's just offensive how we pounce on tragedy for "entertainment"--there's no peace for the families who are grieving today--just a pounding of "shoulda, woulda, coulda."   If it scares and shocks us, let's diminish the horror with flashy reports, gossip, and pointing fingers.

And don't even get me started on how the left-wing is going to spin this and put the blame on the president in some shape or form... *rolling eyes*

  • Hmm... if the Germans hadn't partially gotten it right, I'd have thought it was the German daily Bilge

Good points, though. I agree completely about the media, and am at the same time very amused at how our society runs off of what we hear through the media.  The people truly are god here, and dictate how we think and what we believe.

  • I read another article recently where there was a similar college shooting. The only difference was that after the initial shots occured, two friends ran to their car, grabbed their guns, and came back and stopped the original gunman by holding him at gunpoint until authorities arrived. I wish i could find that article now.

The funny thing is, the Virginia Tech campus is a self-proclaimed gun-free zone, meaning no one is allowed to pring a gun onto the property. Unfortunately though, when somebody DOES bring one to school, you are in quite a predicament.

  • Cum catapultae proscriptae erunt tum soli proscripti catapultas habebunt. :)

You can't argue with it if it is in Latin!

  • Speaking of language that should prompt action, my question is: Why was this kid allowed to remain at university after the garbage he wrote in his English classes? Why would he not have been expelled at that time? Ideas have consequences in many arenas.

With profound sadness for my alma mater,
    Kathy

  • Mr. Callihan!

Thank you for the Latin help on my blog! *scribbles feverishly in his notebook about intransitive verbs* I am not sure why others didn't take me seriously when I asked for corrections. Maybe . . .maybe they *want* me to fail at Latin . . . yes . . . . yes, that *must* be it! They think that if I fail they will have the Doffee all to themselves . . . No, precious . . . we will work harder at our studies, precious . . . we wonts let them takes you . . . *makes a coughing, choking sound deep in his throat that could be mistaken for the word . . . Doffee*

  • So correct!  All you have said above, together with the perpetrator's victim-mentality (as is so often the case) spawns a lethal creature capable of the evil seen here.  We're remembering hero, Liviu Librescu, the aeronautics engineering professor and Holocaust survivor who died blocking his students from gunfire. - Lissilote's mom.
