  • WHAT CONSTITUTES PROOF AGAINST GLOBAL WARMING?

The argument for global warming is not undermined by an occasional cold winter or heavy snow. We like to laugh at the irony of a global warming conference being cancelled due to snow, but such an event is not proof against the theory. We chuckle at a cold winter and say, “so much for global warming!” But even if the advocates of global warming theory were right, there would still be fluctuations. During cold eras in the past, there were occasional warm summers and winters, and in a period of warming, there are of course occasional cold spells. The theory of global warming simply says that the average temperature is rising, not that there will never be any cold temps. If we’re going to argue against global warming, we should be careful not to make fools of ourselves by trying to score silly and cheap points.

  • Right!  They’ve (who is they anyway??) often argued that such things as winters or blizzards are signs of global warming.  This makes me think of the pro-global-warming movie The Day After Tomorrow, which is all about a scientist’s son trapped in a sort of ice age in New York City, due, of course, to global warming.

  • I just saw that movie, too! I thought it was a brilliant example of slippery rhetoric . . . we all freeze to death because of global warming.

No. I DO understand what you’re saying, Mr. Callihan. We should know our enemy before we can fight him effectively. Unfortunately, I think our enemy keeps adapting his theory to fit our arguments.

  • Agreed. To mylordkate: Not only to our arguments, but to the “evidence.” Of course, that’s what a theory should do, but that’s also why it’s so powerful, and why people can hold onto it against all odds, *real* evidence to the contrary, and even a better theory/explanation. Of course, some people hold on to their theories because they don’t want to believe the truth. Evolution is a good example. Those who do not want to believe in a special creation by God have limited options, but they’ve devised a theory that has even deceived many who think they believe the Bible.
